Hud (1963)
Hud (1963)
Another fabulous film by Martin Ritt who directs this Larry McMurtry story. Paul Newman received his third Best Actor Oscar nomination playing the (title role) son who can’t live up to his father’s (Melvyn Douglas as Homer Bannon) expectations while he harasses the hired help Alma Brown played by Patricia Neal. Academy Awards for Douglas (the first of his two for Supporting Actor; the other was for Being There (1979)) Neal (Best Actress) and celebrated cinematographer James Wong Howe (his second out of the ten nominations he ended up receiving in his career – his first was for The Rose Tattoo (1955)) and nominations for director Ritt (his only!) the Screenplay (the first shared by Harriet Frank Jr. & Irving Ravetch) and the film’s B&W Art Direction-Set Decoration. Brandon De Wilde and Whit Bissell are among those who also appear.
