The Sound of Music (1965)

"How do you solve a problem like Maria?" - a weak year for Great Movies saw this delightful Rodgers & Hammerstein musical win the Best Picture Oscar over Carlo Ponti's Doctor Zhivago (1965). Director Robert Wise, its Editing, Sound, and Score also won. In another Oscar irony, Mary Martin (who played Maria on Broadway) co-produced the film making $80 million while paying Julie Andrews (Oscar nominated) only $225,000! Supporting Actress Peggy Wood was also nominated. Added to the National Film Registry in 2001. #55 on AFI' 100 Greatest Movies list. #27 on AFI's 00 Greatest Love Stories list. "The Sound of Music" is #10 on AFI's 100 Top Movie Songs of All Time. "My Favorite Things" is #64 on AFI's 100 Top Movie Songs of All Time. "Do Re Mi" is #88 on AFI's 100 Top Movie Songs of All Time. #4 on AFI's 25 Greatest Movie Musicals list.
