Uninvited The (1944)

Ray Milland plays a writer who with his sister Ruth Hussey buys a seaside "haunted" house from Donald Crisp who lives nearby with his granddaughter (Gail Russell). Russell is initially upset because she has fond memories of the house she used to live in even though it’s the place of her mother’s tragic death. However against Crisp’s wishes she gains access to the house through Milland who’s become infatuated with her. Strange occurrences are investigated by Milland Hussey and a local doctor (Alan Napier) which ultimately lead to a Miss Holloway (Cornelia Otis Skinner) Russell’s mother’s former nurse. Miss Holloway now runs a sanitarium and worships her former employer’s memory. Dorothy Stickney plays a patient in the sanitarium. Directed by Lewis Allen this slightly above average ghost story mystery romance drama was scripted by Dodie Smith and Frank Partos from a Dorothy Macardle novel. Charles Lang’s B&W Cinematography received an Academy Award nomination.
