A remake of the classic One Way Passage (1932) starring William Powell and Kay Francis this lesser version stars George Brent and Merle Oberon. It was directed by Edmund Goulding; Warren Duff wrote the screenplay from the Robert Lord (who’d won an Oscar for the original) story. It’s about the two leads who meet then fall in love on a cruise ship traveling from Hong Kong to San Francisco. Both have fateful secrets which they are able to keep from each other till the end – his is that he’s is on the way to San Quentin for murder hers is that she’s terminally ill and not expected to live very long. Brent is being "escorted" by a police lieutenant played by Pat O’Brien. Oberon has a nurse and is also being monitored by a couple on their honeymoon played by Geraldine Fitzgerald and George Reeves. Frank McHugh plays the same role he played in the earlier version a slippery con who knows Brent’s character and tries to help him escape. Binnie Barnes plays another con on-board from Brent’s past who’s scamming a rich foreigner played by Eric Blore but decides to help McHugh by playing up to O’Brien. Henry O’Neill plays the ship’s doctor.
