Raging Bull (1980)

Perhaps director Martin Scorsese's best film and another great boxing movie, this one is a biography of Jake La Motta, a middle weight boxing champion with a violent and (overall a) pretty messed up life, convincingly played by Robert De Niro, who won the Best Actor Academy Award. It's based on LaMotta's book, written with Joseph Carter and Peter Savage, that was scripted by Paul Schrader and Mardik Martin. Cathy Moriarty plays La Motta's wife, Joe Pesci his brother Joey. The film and its director received Oscar nominations, as did Moriarty, Pesci, its Cinematography and Sound; it won for Editing. Added to the National Film Registry in 1990. #24 on AFI's 100 Greatest Movies list. #51 on AFI's 100 Most Heart-Pounding Movies list.
