Libeled Lady (1936)

A terrific comedy with an outstanding cast including Jean Harlow, Myrna Loy, Spencer Tracy, and William Powell. Nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Tracy is a workaholic New York newspaper editor who can't seem to find the time to wed his fiance (Harlow, so you know he must have REAL problems!). But heiress Myrna Loy has filed a $5 million lawsuit against Tracy's paper for libel, they claimed she broke up a marriage. To save his job, Tracy schemes to find a way to make the story true, using Harlow and an old rival, Powell. Walter Connolly, Charley Grapewin, Cora Witherspoon & E.E. Clive are among the others who also appear. Directed by Jack Conway, this Wallace Sullivan story was adapted by George Oppenheimer, Howard Emmett Rogers, & Maurine Dallas Watkins and later remade as Easy to Wed (1946) with Van Johnson, Esther Williams, Lucille Ball, Keenan Wynn, and Cecil Kellaway (among others).
