Forbidden Planet (1956)

One of the science fiction gems from the 1950's, starring Walter Pidgeon as Dr. Morbius who lives with his lovely daughter Altaira (Anne Francis) on the titled planet. Commander John Adams (Leslie Nielsen) and his spaceship crew (including Richard Anderson & Earl Holliman) arrive from the Earth, and the story plays out like William Shakespeare's The Tempest, though Irving Block & Allen Adler are the film's credited writers; Cyril Hume wrote the screenplay. Directed by Fred Wilcox, this sci-fi thriller features Robby the Robot's film debut, and helped inspire TV's Star Trek series. Added to the National Film Registry in 2013.
