A documentary type film with Burgess Meredith as real life war correspondent Ernie Pyle (who died before this picture was released) chronically the lives of an infantry platoon during World War II. This William Wellman (A Star is Born (1937)) directed film features Robert Mitchum’s only Academy Award nominated performance (only Supporting too!) if you can believe that! Mitchum plays the unit’s officer. The film also received nominations for its Original Song "Linda" Musical Score (Ann Ronell & Louis Applebaum’s only Academy recognition) and Screenplay Writing – Leopold Atlas Guy Endore & Philip Stevenson also earned their only Academy recognition for adapting Pyle’s books. Added to the National Film Registry in 2009.
