Oklahoma Kid The (1939)

Oklahoma Kid The (1939)

An entertaining Western directed by Lloyd Bacon which features a pretty good ‘sooner’ land rush scene and stars James Cagney in the title role Humphrey Bogart as the "bad guy" who wears black Rosemary Lane as the girl Donald Crisp as her father the judge Charles Middleton and Ward Bond among others. Featuring a story by Wally Kline & Edward Paramore who wrote the screenplay with Warren Duff & Robert Buckner.

Bogart’s gang steals the money intended to pay the Indians for their land; Cagney then steals it from him. During the land rush Bogart grabs the best piece of land even though someone else had claimed it first. He then "trades" it to the people who want to build a town on it for the rights to own its saloon and gambling house. After a while his crooked dealings cause the people to want to elect a new mayor who also happens to be the Kid’s father. Because of his notorious reputation this fact is unknown to all but Bogart’s character; he plans to use it to his advantage to maintain his grip on the community. Meanwhile the judge and his daughter have influenced a positive change in the Kid. Of course the film leads to a climactic clash between these two "gangsters" out of water.
