Woman of the Year (1942)

Woman of the Year (1942)

This essential romantic comedy won a Best Writing Oscar for Michael Kanin & Ring Larner Jr. (on their first nominations) in part because of a great scene at a baseball game (and some other great repartee) which mark this first pairing of Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn (who received a Best Actress nomination as well). Hepburn & Tracy play newspaper writers working for the same paper. When they meet Tracy is instantly attracted to her (legs). Hepburn is a woman that won’t let her success be interrupted until she too falls in love with the simpler sports writer Tracy. They marry but conflict arises when Tracy takes a backseat to Hepburn who’s named "woman of the year" and her career. Gee ya think they’ll resolve it? Fay Bainter Reginald Owen William Bendix and Roscoe Karns (among others) also appear. Directed by George Stevens. Added to the National Film Registry in 1999. #90 on AFI’s 100 Funniest Movies list. #74 on AFI’s 100 Greatest Love Stories list.
