Sundowners The (1960)
Sundowners The (1960)
A terrific period piece about a family of drovers (sheep herders) in Australia in the 1920’s and the struggle within the family between those that want to settle down mother (Deborah Kerr) and son vs. the father (Robert Mitchum) that doesn’t. Peter Ustinov plays a British drifter who joins them; Glynis Johns a woman for him. A 4 star film by director Fred Zinnemann who received Oscar nominations for Best Picture & Director. Isobel Lennart’s adaptation of Jon Cleary’s novel was also nominated as were Kerr (her sixth and final Best Actress nomination without winning the award) and Johns (her only).
You are darn tooting this is a 4 star film. This and Ryan’s Daughter really showcase Robert Mitchum’s skills and basic appeal. This is a big good film that can be watched again and again. I think that there has never been a film that had Peter Ustinov that wasn’t worth a look.
