Divorcee The (1930)

Divorcee The (1930)

Directed by Robert Z. Leonard with dialogue and continuity provided by John Meehan this above average drama features Norma Shearer’s Oscar winning Best Actress performance. The film director Leonard and writer Meehan were also nominated. Even though its pre-morality code storyline is dated it’s still a worthwhile film today dealing with the hypocrisy of men who have affairs and expect to be accepted back into the marriage by the wronged wife while refusing to feel the same if/when their wife does the same. In this case unbeknownst to the husband (played by Chester Morris) it’s his best friend Don (played by Robert Montgomery) that catches his wife "on the rebound" after she’d thrown him out for his "flaunting" his long affair with Janice (Mary Doran). Conrad Nagel plays a reckless friend in the couple’s circle of partying friends that includes the aforementioned Don Dot (Helen Johnson aka Judith Wood) and Helen (Florence Eldridge).
