Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Director Steven Spielberg (Oscar nominated) followed up his tremendous success Jaws with this unusual science fiction film (including stunning visual effects – winning the Cinematography Oscar) about two people whose lives are powerfully affected and intertwined by their encounter with aliens. Richard Dreyfuss and Melinda Dillon (Oscar nominated) play the two. Teri Garr plays Dreyfuss’ confused wife; (normally a director now actor) Francois Truffaut & Bob Balaban (now an author of children’s books about a bionic dog) provide support as government employees trying to communicate with the aliens. #64 on AFI’s 100 Greatest Movies list. #31 on AFI’s Most Heart-Pounding Movies list. #58 on AFI’s 100 Most Inspiring Movies list.
Added to the National Film Registry in 2007.
