Freshman The (1925)
Freshman The (1925)
A terrific silent film featuring the many talents of one of the greatest comedians of the time. Harold Lloyd plays a young man who dreams of getting into college being a famous athlete and impressing the co-eds. However when he shows up on campus and exhibits his specially designed introduction he quickly becomes an object of ridicule by the other young men (including Brooks Benedict & James Anderson the football star) there. Jobyna Ralston plays the female student he falls for who befriends him. He tries to join the football team (coached by actor Pat Harmon) becoming its water-boy instead. Lots of classic physical comedy including trouble at a dance with an ill-tailored (by actor Joseph Harrington) suit and on the gridiron. Grady Sutton appears uncredited as another student at the college. Directed by Fred Newmeyer and co-written by Ted Wilde who received his only Oscar nomination directing Lloyd in the film Speedy (1928) this picture was added to the National Film Registry in 1990. #79 on AFI’s 100 Funniest Movies list.
