Producer director (with David Lean) and original screenplay writer Noel Coward earned an Honorary Award for this outstanding production achievement to go along with the only other Academy recognition he received in his career for this film: Best Picture & Best Writing Oscar nominations. He also played the lead role British Navy Captain Edward V. Kinross in this excellent war drama about the special love seamen have for their ship and the loyalty of and camaraderie between the men who serve. The story begins just before Britain’s involvement in World War II brought about when aggressor Germany failed to respond diplomatically and continues through the Battle of Crete the sinking of their destroyer HMS Torrin (representing Lord Louis Mountbatten’s HMS Kelly experiences) and the aftermath. John Mills plays seaman Shorty Blake Bernard Miles plays another of the ship’s officers CPO Walter Hardy (Joyce Carey plays his ill-fated pregnant wife) Celia Johnson (in her screen debut) plays the captain’s wife (and mother to their two young children) Alix who gives a moving impromptu after dinner speech about her husband (his stirring speech at the end is another highlight) and his men’s attachment to the Torrin (future producer director & Sir) Richard Attenborough appears (uncredited) in his screen debut as a young sailor who leaves his post Leslie Howard lends his voice and (a pre-one-year-old) Juliet Mills appears as a baby of Kay Walsh’s character. Dozens of other credited actors also appear.
