Marlene Dietrich earned her only Academy Award nomination (Best Actress) for her role in this film playing opposite Gary Cooper and Adolphe Menjou. Director Josef von Sternberg was also nominated as was the Cinematography & Art Direction. Cooper is a soldier in the French Foreign Legion (a group you join to forget or escape your past) who meets then romances provocative nightclub singer Dietrich before he must go on a perilous mission. Menjou plays Cooper’s rival for Dietrich’s attention. The film was added to the National Film Registry in 1992. #83 on AFI’s 100 Greatest Love Stories list.
