William Faulkner adapted this Ernest Hemingway novel for the screen a wartime romance adventure which was directed by Howard Hawks that marks the first of four films featuring the on-screen pairing of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall (who became an off-screen pair as well). Bacall had just turned twenty when this film was released her screen debut and was made famous for her character Slim’s line to Bogie’s: "You know how to whistle don’t you Steve? You just put your lips together and blow." (#34 on AFI’s 100 Greatest Movie Quotes list). Walter Brennan Hoagy Carmichael and Sheldon Leonard also appear. #60 on AFI’s 100 Greatest Love Stories list.
