A great drama from director Federico Fellini which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film; it’s screenplay co-written by the director and Tullio Pinelli (his first nomination) was also Oscar nominated (Ennio Flaiano also contributed). It stars Anthony Quinn (Viva Zapata! (1952)) as a gruff circus performer a strongman who travels the Italian countryside giving shows. He "buys" a girl (Giulietta Masina) to be his wife and co-star from her poor mother. He treats her badly. However when he "joins" an existing "circus" she meets another performer a fool (Richard Basehart) and the attraction is mutual. This causes a jealous and ultimately tragic reaction from her husband.
