Mutiny on the Bounty (1935)
Mutiny on the Bounty (1935)
Strong performances by Clark Gable (also in the previous year’s Best Picture winner) as Fletcher Christian Charles Laughton (unforgettable as Captain Bligh – AFI’s #19 villain) and Franchot Tone as Roger Byam prompted three Best Actor Academy Award nominations from the film which predictably led to the only other Oscar nominated Lead Actor (Victor McLaglen in The Informer (1935)) taking home the gold. Director Frank Lloyd (Cavalcade (1933)) was also nominated as was the film’s Editing (Margaret Booth’s only nomination) its Score and the Screenplay (which was written by Talbot Jennings Jules Furthman and Carey Wilson; Irving Thalberg had purchased the screen rights of the Charles Nordhoff-James Norman Hall book from Lloyd). Dudley Digges Donald Crisp Henry Stephenson Spring Byington and Ian Wolfe are among those who also appear. A classic story this was the first remake to win the Best Picture Oscar. #86 on AFI’s 100 Greatest Movies list.
Later remade by the studio (MGM) with Marlon Brando and Trevor Howard in 1962.
